چکیده

The purpose of this paper is to develop a class of semantic tableau systems for some counterfactual logics. All in all I will discuss 1024 systems. Possible world semantics is used to interpret our formal languages. Soundness results are obtained for every tableau system and completeness results for a large subclass of these.

Tableau-Based Theorem Proving In Normal Conditional Logics

This paper presents an extension of the semantic tableaux approach to theorem proving for the class of normal conditional logics. These logics are based on a possible worlds semantics, but contain a binary “variable conditional” operator =E= instead of the usual operator for necessity. The truth of A +B depends both on the accessibility relation between worlds, and on the proposition expressed ...

The predictive role of counterfactuals

We suggest a model that describes how counterfactuals are constructed and justified. The model can describe how counterfactual beliefs are updated given the unfolding of actual history. It also allows us to examine the use of counterfactuals in prediction, and to show that a logically omniscient reasoner gains nothing from using counterfactuals for prediction.

Free Choice for Simplification

The fact that counterfactuals in general license simplification of disjunctive antecedents is a familiar problem for the traditional Lewis-Stalnaker variably strict analysis of counterfactuals. This paper demonstrates that the data are well explained by a dynamic strict analysis of counterfactuals that uses ideas from the inquisitive semantic tradition to provide a satisfying semantic explanati...

Useful Counterfactuals

Counterfactual conditional sentences can be useful in artificial intelligence as they are in human affairs. In particular, they allow reasoners to learn from experiences that they did not quite have. Our tools for making inferences from counterfactuals permit inferring sentences that are not themselves counterfactual. This is what makes them useful. A simple class of useful counterfactuals invo...

Embracing Events in Causal Modelling: Interventions and Counterfactuals in CP-Logic

This paper integrates Pearl’s seminal work on probability and causality with that of Shafer. Using the language of CP-logic, it transposes Pearl’s analysis of interventions and counterfactuals to the semantic context of Shafer’s probability trees. This gives us definitions that work not on the level of random variables, but on the level of Humean events. There are some tangible benefits to our ...
